Brain repository sits an hour from Frederick

One of the largest repositories of brains sits approximately an hour away from Frederick.

Located on the Johns Hopkins University campus, on North Wolfe Street, across from a Residence Inn, the Lieber Institute for Brain Development has approximately 3,000 brains.

They are collected from various medical examiner’s offices, including the one in Baltimore, which serves all of Maryland. The brains are donated by families. In addition to the brains, a hair sample and blood sample are also collected, said Dr. Joel Kleinman, associate director of clinical services at the Lieber Institute.

Each morning, staff members call families asking about brain donations. If the family agrees, the consent is recorded on audio, he said.
